Social security benefits and SSI payments for centenarians, December 1994.

As the size of the overall centenarian population in the United States increases, the number of centenarians participating in Social Security Administration programs grows as well. This note offers some statistical information about centenarians receiving Social Security-Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance (OASDI)--benefits and/or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments, highlighting data on their sex, type of benefit, and the State in which they reside. In December 1994, nearly 43 million people were receiving Social Security benefits, and more than 6.4 million were receiving SSI payments.’ Of the total of these beneficiaries, 40,583 were centenarians, persons who were aged 100 or older. Table 1 shows these centenarians by type of benefit and sex. The centenarians were divided into three beneficiary categories: those receiving OASDI only (35,679 persons), those receiving SSI only (2,420 persons), and those receiving benefits concurrently from both programs (2,484 persons). As would be expected with women’s
